Diagram types: There are different types

Various types of diagrams are available in the widely used Microsoft Office package. In the following, we explain which options are available and at which point which diagram is best suited.
The main types of diagrams in MS Office
There are numerous options for creating diagrams in the Excel, Word and Powerpoint programs that are part of the Microsoft Office program package. We introduce you to the most important types. You can create these in all three programs.
- One of the most common types of charts is the bar chart. In this form of diagram, there are different categories on the horizontal x-axis, and the different values are shown on the vertical axis via the height of bars. This diagram variant is suitable for all data that are available in tabular form.
- Line diagrams are particularly suitable for displaying the course of one or more developments. Here, times are often given on the horizontal x-axis, the vertical y-axis shows certain values at the times. There can only be one line in a diagram, but it can also contain several lines.
- The common types of charts also include bar charts . These are particularly suitable for comparisons. Usually, several categories are arranged vertically, for which bars of different lengths each indicate the value of different elements.
- In a pie or pie chart, elements are represented as parts of a circle. Individual circle segments represent the share of a single element in the total. This type of diagram is therefore useful if you want to display several parts of a known whole.
Special chart types in MS Office
In addition to the widespread types of diagrams, Microsoft Office programs also offer the possibility of working with other beautiful diagram types. All of the diagrams presented below can also be created in MS Word, Excel and Powerpoint.
- The appearance of a pie chart resembles a pie chart. Like a pie chart, it shows parts of individual elements in a whole. The display in several rings one inside the other can make comparisons between different distributions visible. It should be noted that ring diagrams are difficult to read and can be confusing.
- A surface diagram combines the representation of proportions and developments to a certain extent. It is like a line diagram, in which several lines indicate the course of certain elements. In addition, the areas under the lines show the distributions of the elements.
- Dot and bubble diagrams show the relationships between two elements, which are plotted on the x and y axes. Both elements have numerical values. A dot indicates a y value belonging to an x value. The peculiarity of the bubble diagram is that the size of the points varies and thus the expression of a third variable can be displayed.
