The differences from GPRS, EDGE, UMTS, LTE

GPRS, EDGE, UMTS, LTE - many mobile radio systems have developed. We explain to you what the differences are.
GPRS - data transmission at 55 kbit / s
The transmission speed was increased with GPRS (General Packet Radio Service). This enables new usage options:
- You can use the GPRS card for the computer to access the Internet on the go - albeit slowly.
- GPRS works package-oriented. This gives, for example, greater reliability.
- GPRS is used for MMS or WAP pages.
- The maximum data rate of GPRS is 55 kbit / s.
EDGE - the intermediate step to UMTS
EDGE (Enhanced Data Rates for GSM Evolution) has been expanded in Germany since 2006. Like GPRS, it uses the GSM network. However, higher bandwidths can be achieved with a new process.
- EDGE enables data transfer speeds of up to 220 kbit / s to be achieved.
- Even rural areas without UMTS get mobile internet.
UMTS - the third generation (3G)
UMTS (Universal Mobile Telecommunications System) greatly increased the transmission speed:
- Transfer rates of up to 384 kbit / s can be achieved.
- Video telephony and other data-intensive content can be used.
- The HSPA extension gives you a maximum data transfer rate of up to 7.2 megabits / s.
LTE - ultra-fast surfing
With LTE (Long Term Evolution) you can sometimes access the Internet faster than with a DSL connection:
- Data rates of up to 100 Mbit / s can be achieved here, with LTE-Advanced even up to 1 Gbit / s.
- LTE has been expanding in Germany since 2011.
- Good latency is also possible in rural regions. So you can also play online games.
