The most important video resolutions at a glance
Videos are available in different resolutions. In this overview we present the most important video resolutions.
- The standard definition corresponds to a resolution of 1024 × 576 pixels.
- When multiplied, this results in approximately 0.59 megapixels. This number describes the number of pixels. TV stations that do not yet broadcast HD use this resolution.
High definition (HD)
- The resolution 1280 × 720 pixels is the successor to the standard definition.
- It is called HD and has a total number of pixels of 921, 600, i.e. approximately 0.92 megapixels. That is about 30 percent more than the standard definition. Some public service broadcasters use this resolution.
Full HD resolution
- Full HD refers to the resolution of 1920 × 1080 pixels.
- This corresponds to about 2.07 megapixels, which is more than twice as many pixels as with HD. Some private broadcasters use this resolution.
For cinema films: 4K
- The 4096 × 2160 pixels result in approximately 8.8 megapixels.
- The 4K resolutions are mainly used for the production of cinema films.
VGA and qHD
Other resolutions are VGA and qHD.
- VGA is the original resolution and corresponds to 640x480 in 4: 3 aspect ratio. qHD stands for quad high definition.
- The resolution corresponds to 2560x1440 pixels and is mainly used for high-end smartphones with large screens.
