As the name diplomatic passport suggests, this passport is reserved for certain groups of people.
- Diplomats, such as ambassadors and embassy officials, usually receive this special passport. However, MPs, ministers, prime ministers as well as the Federal President and Chancellor are generally in possession of a diplomatic passport. The judges of the Federal Constitutional Court and high-ranking members of the IOC are also in possession of a diplomatic passport.
- In Germany, diplomatic passports may only be issued by the Federal Foreign Office. The passport regulation regulates the cases in which a diplomatic ID card is issued. Officially, the coveted blue passports are only issued if it is in the public interest.
- The term "public interest" is of course quite flexible and can be interpreted in different ways. However, there is no right to a diplomatic passport. A diplomatic passport can also be withdrawn. This can happen, for example, because of improper behavior or because it was only issued temporarily.
- Advantage: You are usually exempt from the visa requirement with a diplomatic passport.
- However, the holder of a diplomatic passport does not automatically enjoy immunity. Only after the accreditation of the diplomat or an official invitation does the holder of the diplomatic passport obtain immunity in the corresponding country.
