Discord: Update failed - you can do that
Discord acknowledges an error in the update process with the message "Update failed". We explain the most common causes of errors and show you solutions.
Discord: error during update or installation - so proceed
If there is a problem with updating to a new version or with the installation under Windows, a manual and clean reinstallation helps:
- First, close all instances of Discord. So check the taskbar and exit Discord using the right-click menu.
- Check in the Task Manager whether Discord processes are still running in the background and terminate them if necessary. This also includes the Discord web interface.
- Now you have to remove the program files from Discord manually. You can find these folders in the AppData area of Windows.
- You must delete two folders in total. Execute the key combination [WINDOWS] + [R] and type "% appdata%" in the field and confirm with "OK" (see screenshot). This opens the actually hidden AppData folder directly.
- Now find the subfolder "Discord" and delete it. Do exactly the same in the "% LocalAppData%" folder.
- Then download the latest version from our download area and install it. If errors occur again, it sometimes helps if you right-click to run the file as an administrator.
Start Discord in compatibility mode
Sometimes it can also be helpful to start Discord using compatibility mode:
- You can find the executable file that you have to start in compatibility mode via the path: "% LocalAppData% / Discord / * Version number *". You can reach it identically to the fourth point in the first paragraph.
- This approach applies especially to Windows 10 users. Try the compatibility mode for Windows 7 and 8.
