An awkward movement and it happened - the phone or tablet falls down and the display is broken. This guide shows you how to save important data and images that you have saved on the device.
Broken cell phone or tablet display: Save data on the PC
If the cell phone falls out of your hand or an object falls on your cell phone, it can happen that not only does the glass pane of the cell phone break, but the display also breaks. If important data such as pictures, films or music are stored on the device and they are not mirrored via the cloud, the following steps will help you to save the data on a PC.
Save data, pictures and contacts - how it works
If the cell phone or tablet is still working, there is hope for all the data and images stored on it: Connect the device to a computer using a USB cable. A few seconds later, the cell phone folders should appear as additional drives in the file manager.
- After your mobile phone or tablet has been recognized, you can click into the respective folder - for example "Camera" on the device memory of the mobile phone - and copy the images stored there into another folder on the PC.
- For saved contacts, phone numbers and SMS you can use a manufacturer program to save personal data on the PC. For Samsung devices, this is the "Kies" software.
- If you have previously synchronized your phone with a cloud, all pictures or videos are already stored there. You can then access it from other devices.
- Alternative: If your cell phone has an SD card, you can remove it and connect it directly to the PC. You may need an SD card adapter for this.

PIN entry despite broken display
It is more difficult when the cell phone was switched off, when the display broke, or when the battery fell out when the cell phone fell. Normally, the cell phone does not release memory access until the correct PIN number has been entered.
- If the mobile phone display is broken, you can enter the PIN blindly with an external USB keyboard. To do this, insert the keyboard into the USB port of the mobile phone with a USB adapter and type in the PIN. Then remove the keyboard, plug the USB cable into the cell phone and the PC and can access the cell phone memory from the PC as described in paragraph two.
- Even easier: Take the SIM card out of the phone before you switch it on. Then the PIN entry is omitted and you can directly access the device memory and the built-in SD card via the PC.
The cell phone or tablet no longer makes a peep
- If you can no longer switch on the cell phone or tablet or the PC does not recognize the device memory, it is much more difficult to access the data.
- In this case, contact the dealer from whom you bought the device or a professional data recovery company.
- However, data recovery costs can be in the three-digit range.
