DLP or LCD: Which projector to buy
Related Videos: DLP vs LCD (April 2024).
Before you buy a projector, you have to choose between two techniques: DLP or LCD. We explain what is behind it and which projector is suitable when.
DLP or LCD - what's the difference?
DLP and LCD projectors differ in the technology with which they create an image.
- With the LCD projector, the light from the projector lamp is split into the basic colors green, blue and red with a prism and directed through three small LCD screens.
- The LCD screens only let the light through at the points required for the picture, then the three light beams are brought together again and create a complete picture.
- With the DLP projector, the light first falls through a rotating color filter. Then it is deflected by millions of small, movable mirrors and projected onto the wall through the lens.
- By changing the mirror to match the respective color, the human eye creates a complete picture from the individual successive pictures in the three primary colors.
- In another practical tip, we explain the two projector technologies in detail.
- In addition to the LCD and DLP projectors, there is also a competitor model: the LED projector.
Which projector is better?
Neither technique is the better one. Which projector you should buy depends on what you want to use it for.
- The advantage of LCD technology is that the dark and light colors are finely graded.
- However, the maximum contrast is lower than with DLP technology because the picture can never be created without light.
- The DLP technology, on the other hand, offers the possibility of turning away the small mirrors in dark places. This creates a real black in the image, the contrast is higher than that of the LCD.
- The night part of the DLP projector is that the picture is composed of single pictures in the basic colors. This creates streaks of color in the image during rapid movements, one speaks of the rainbow effect.
- If you want to use the projector for home cinema, you should use an LCD device to avoid the rainbow effect.
- The DLP projector, on the other hand, is better suited for projecting photos and presentations because it provides a higher contrast.
