If you receive the message "DNS server does not respond", no more connections to websites are established. We'll show you how to fix the possible causes.
DNS server does not answer: So do this now
Often, the router simply cannot connect to the Internet or the computer, so the said error appears. In rare cases, the cause is also on the PC itself.
- Restart: In most cases, restarting the router will solve the problem. To do this, pull the power plug out of the router, wait a few seconds until all electronic components have discharged, and then plug it back in. In the meantime, you can also restart your PC.
- Firewall: Another source of interference can be the firewall of your computer. Disable the firewall. If the error then no longer occurs, you should look for the cause in the firewall.
- Browser: Changing the browser for a short time can also help. If you have two browsers installed, use the other one. The installation of another browser should not be necessary for this.
Change DNS server manually in case of problems
If the problem is still not resolved, you should change the DNS server. Use the IP "8.8.8.8", this will use the DNS server from Google, a popular alternative.
- The most effective way is to change the DNS server directly on the router. Here you will find instructions for the FritzBox and the Speedport of Telekom. The process works similarly for other routers.
- Alternatively, change the DNS server on Windows or Mac OS. Here, changing the IP address is also done quickly.
Tip: Faster surfing thanks to a new router
Data throughputs of up to 1, 700 Mbit / s in theory and 350 Mbit / s in practice are no longer a problem for current routers. You don't even have to spend a lot of money on these dream values:
- Recommended and fast models with numerous additional functions are available from around 50 euros.
- Even with the cheapest routers, you will notice the difference to your standard device, which you get free of charge when you sign the contract.
