From 2019, stricter rules for New Year's Eve fireworks will apply in Dortmund and Düsseldorf. We have put together an overview of all important innovations for you.
Dortmund and Düsseldorf: Overview of the rules for New Year's fireworks
The DHU (German environmental aid) had appealed to 100 German cities to only allow the sale of black powder-free New Year's rockets and firecrackers. The reason for this is the high environmental and noise pollution caused by fireworks. Animals in particular suffer from extreme noise.
- Dortmund rejected the DHU's application. However, to avoid accidents, there are two zones in the city where fireworks are strictly prohibited.
- The ban applies in the area between the main train station, Katharinenstrasse and Kampstrasse, including the area surrounding St. Petrikirche.
- New Year's Eve fireworks are also prohibited on Leeds Square, including the area surrounding St. Reinoldi and St. Marien Church, as well as on the Old Market
- In Düsseldorf, fireworks are banned in almost all of the old town anyway.
- Warning: Not only lighting, but owning fireworks is also prohibited.

This is the basis of the application from German environmental aid
The DHU's appeal was triggered by a legal opinion commissioned by environmental aid.
- According to the report, particulate matter levels in 98 of the 100 cities that the DHU approached with their application were above the WHO threshold during New Year's celebrations.
- The measured values are therefore harmful to health. You also pollute the environment.
- However, the DHU's application was not very successful. None of the major German cities responded to the environmental aid proposal.
- Existing prohibition zones have nothing to do with particulate matter pollution, but rather with the safety and protection of citizens from accidents and fires.
- Only in Munich did the particulate matter pollution play a role alongside the high levels of garbage and the usual safety measures.
