iOS 10: Downgrade to iOS 9
Note: Unfortunately, downgrade has not been possible since mid-October 2016. Apple has disabled the activation of iOS 9 on devices compatible with iOS 10.
- If you downgrade to iOS 9, all data on your device will be lost. To keep your data, you need an iTunes backup from the time of iOS 9.
- Back up your data via iCloud, it doesn't matter whether the last backup was carried out under iOS 9 or iOS 10. An iCloud backup is definitely recommended before downgrading.
- In addition to backing up your data, another step is required before downgrading. You have to turn off the Find my iPhone option in Settings.
Step 1: download firmware for iOS 9
- First open the IPSW.me website. Here you can find all iOS versions for download.
- Select your iOS model below and choose the latest firmware.
- The firmware for iOS 9 is downloaded via the "Download" button. This can take several minutes.
Step 2: downgrade from iOS 10 to iOS 9
- Connect your iPhone, iPad or iPod to the PC with a USB cable and start iTunes.
- Select your device in the top left corner and you will find the "Restore iPhone" button on the right.
- Hold down the Shift key on Windows and Alt on Mac.
- Now click on the "Restore iPhone" button and select the downloaded firmware from iOS 9.
- If you confirm the process, iOS 9 will be reinstalled on your Apple device.
- If the process is complete, you can import an old backup directly via iTunes if you wish. An iCloud backup can be restored directly on the device during setup.
