Watch the triple moon spectacle in the live stream: How it works
Lunar eclipse, super moon and "blue moon" in one night: a triple spectacle that will only happen again in 2037. You can experience it live thanks to NASA's stream.
As with the solar eclipse in August 2017, we are also denied the view of this astronomical spectacle. The best places for the lunar eclipse are in the north-west of America, Australia, New Zealand, East Russia, the Middle East and parts of Asia. If you still want to experience the unique phenomenon, you can do so thanks to NASA and its live stream from 11:30 a.m.Central European time.
- What is special about this solar eclipse is the combination of three phenomena that are rare in themselves. The best known of these is the lunar eclipse itself. The moon wanders through the shadow cast by the earth and is darkened.
- The term super moon means that the moon is in orbit close to Earth. As a result, it looks many times larger than usual.
- "Blue Moon" comes from the English and describes the rare phenomenon when there are two full moons in a month. This happens about every two and a half years.
- Both the super moon and the "Blue Moon" are also visible to us. However, the lunar eclipse can only be experienced via live stream.
- Tip: With our CHIP web app you get directly to the stream of the super blue blood moon spectacle.
As an alternative to the direct stream, the lunar eclipse is also shown on NASA TV, the online space station of the American space agency. This offers space fans a whole range of interesting information.
