Protect Dropbox with a password - how it works
You can easily protect your Dropbox with a password or encrypt the data if you are concerned about the security and privacy of your cloud. In this article we reveal how you have to proceed exactly.
Set password for Dropbox in the app
You can set a four-digit passcode in the Drobox apps for iOS and Android. You have to enter this every time you want to access your Dropbox via smartphone or tablet.
- To do this, tap the gear icon at the bottom right of the app and select the "Code lock" category.
- Here you can now set and save your own PIN.
- If you forget the PIN, you can delete the app and then set it up again.
BoxCryptor provides higher security with a password for the Dropbox
If you are very concerned about your privacy and do not want, for example, the US secret service to read your data, you can also encrypt it and secure it with another password.
- BoxCryptor is a simple solution - you can use an encrypted container in your Dropbox immediately after downloading and installing it, in which you can save up to 2 GB. This fits well with the standard Dropbox offer.
- If you use more storage space, which is possible through free extensions or when using SkyDrive, you must license BoxCryptor to protect all your data.
- In the next practical tip, we will show you how to secure Dropbox with BoxCryptor.
Alternative thanks to Open Source: TrueCrypt
There is also a solution as open source, namely TrueCrypt. You can also use this to create encrypted containers in various cloud storage services, including in the Dropbox.
Take care of your password!
Don't forget your password, otherwise your data is even safe from yourself. You should also be aware that data syncing in the Dropbox can of course be more time consuming in the case of a large encrypted container file than with "normal" files.
