Encrypt Dropbox - this is how you protect your files
In this practical tip, we explain how to encrypt your Dropbox and thus protect your files.
How to encrypt your Dropbox with BoxCryptor
If you work with sensitive data from several computers, protect the files with the following steps:
- The security tool "BoxCryptor" encrypts files for common clouds such as Dropbox, GoogleDrive and SkyDrive with AES-256 and RSA algorithms.
- To do this, install the software on your computer. A virtual drive is created in which you store your files. Then they are synchronized with the Dropbox.
- You can only encrypt the file names in the paid version and use the freeware on a maximum of two computers.
- As a private customer, the Pro version as a single license is currently available for 36 euros per year. You pay double when you use the service for business.
Alternatively: Protect Dropbox files with Cloudfogger
As an alternative to BoxCryptor, encrypt your files with the freeware "Cloudfogger".
- The software supports Dropbox and GoogleDrive. It encrypts the files before you upload them. In order to be able to use Cloudfogger, you have to register with your email address during the installation.
- Although the data is encrypted by AES with 256-bit encryption, it can still be released to other users.
- The tool is placed in the normal file system, ie in Windows Explorer. From there it points to the encrypted folder in the Dropbox path (see screenshot). The latter is created automatically when you install Cloudfogger.
- You are not currently paying a contribution to the tool. A paid pro version is to appear shortly, which offers additional features.
