If you want to create a list of data in Excel 2010, the dropdown function can save you a lot of time and nerves. In this article we will show you an example of how to do this.
Integrate a dropdown menu in Excel
Let's say you have to create a directory for your company. You must specify which worker worked how many hours on which day of the week. To make your work faster and without typing errors, create a dropdown menu.
- After opening Excel 2010, first enter the data you need. For example, from cells H1 to H3, write the names Meier, Brodt and Klöppel. The days of the week are in cells I1 to I7 and the hours worked in cells J1 to J10. (Why cell A1 is not started will be explained later).
- Now select cells A2 through A8 (or more, depending on how long your list should be).
- Go to "Data" in the tab and now to "Data check". In the "Validity criteria" under "Allow:" select the item "List". The option to select a "source" now appears. Click on the small button and now select all workers. Click the button again to return to the large window. Then confirm by clicking on "OK".
- Do the same with the days of the week and working hours. Don't start with line A1 so that you can build the list in a more structured way. Since the entered values in lines H1 to J10 are a bit disturbing, you can hide them. To do this, right-click on the letter. You can now select "Hide" in the menu.
This was tested under Windows 7 with Excel 2010. This practical tip explains how to create a schedule in Excel.
