Printer does not recognize cartridge - what to do?
If your printer does not recognize the cartridge, there can be many reasons. We show you possible solutions.
Printer does not recognize cartridge - possible sources of error
Before you doubt your printer, you should check the cartridge:
- Make sure the cartridge fits your printer model. You can find suitable information on the homepage of the printer or cartridge manufacturer.
- Make sure the cartridge is installed correctly. The cartridge packaging comes with instructions that explain how to attach the cartridge correctly.
- Remove protective films and other packaging residues from the cartridge.
- It can also happen that the printer cartridge is simply defective. Only an exchange helps here.
- Inexpensive printer cartridges from other manufacturers are sometimes not recognized by the printer. Therefore, you should read a few test reports or product reviews before buying. You can often find these directly when ordering, for example at Amazon.
Also check the printer
Not only the cartridge, but also the printer could be defective:
- If your printer just doesn't recognize this one cartridge, the problem is with the cartridge.
- Test other cartridges. If these are not recognized either, there is a hardware problem.
- Restart the printer and install the latest drivers.
- If your printer still does not recognize a cartridge, only the customer service of the respective manufacturer can help.
- Note: If your printer is already outside the warranty period, the repair costs usually exceed the actual value. Then look around for a new printer. In our CHIP leaderboard we have summarized the best and cheapest printer recommendations.
