It is not often necessary to reset the printer. However, it can be the best solution for warnings or other problems. This practical tip shows you how to reset the printer.
When a printer reset is necessary
A reset can be made for the internal counter or if your printer has hung up and is no longer working properly due to an error message.
- The internal counter can only be reset for inkjet printers, since they are equipped with an integrated overflow tank. This collects excess ink generated during operations.
- However, this is only necessary if the printer reports a full overflow tank. However, this does not have to be true, since the printers permanently display the message as of a certain number of printing processes.
- You can carry out the normal reset on all common printers, for example where an error message can no longer be deleted or which is hanging for other reasons.
Perform printer reset - how it works
Printers have developed a lot and now have their own apps and built-in displays, from which you can control and reset the device. In the following key points you can read how a reset to the factory settings works for the most common manufacturers. You can also find information on resetting the printer in the operating instructions for your device and on the manufacturer's website.
- At Epson, the reset is usually performed using the free Epson Service Tool software. In the program you will find a separate menu item to perform a reset. If your printer does not support this version, then depending on your model, you will have to look for a different, also paid alternative on the Internet.
- It is simpler with Brother printers. Press the menu and start button of the printer at the same time and immediately afterwards four times the plus button or up arrow. This takes you to the main menu. Now navigate to "Purge Counter" or "Reset" and follow the instructions. Alternatively, the factory settings can also be restored using the "BRAdmin" program.
- You can easily reset most Canon models. To do this, hold down the Power, Formfeed and Print Mode buttons at the same time. If the process is successful, you will hear an audio signal from the printer.
- There is also a key combination for the reset on Pixma printers. To do this, you must switch the printer off and hold the On button pressed when switching on. Press the stop button five times at the same time. You can then release all the buttons. The printer now automatically resets to the factory settings.
- It looks different at HP, because not all models have the option of resetting the counter using the built-in software. The Laserjet series usually does not have this function and must therefore be overhauled after 50, 000 prints. However, a soft reset is possible using the "HP Print and Scan Doctor" software.
