Improve DSL speed - the top tips
Is your internet too slow? With these tips, you can improve your DSL speed to surf the web faster.
1. Request maximum DSL speed from the provider
- One of the decisive factors is the maximum DSL speed available in your region.
- You should therefore ask your provider whether you are currently receiving the maximum DSL speed. The connection in regions is often improved without you automatically benefiting from it.
- Depending on the provider, you can upgrade to a higher speed for free or for a fee, provided that this is available from you. A comparison with other providers is often worthwhile, as the DSL speed can vary between the different providers.
- With the CHIP Speedtest you can find out relatively quickly what speed you are currently on the net.
2. Direct connection instead of DLAN and WLAN
- If you distribute the Internet access in your apartment via DLAN or WLAN, some of the DSL speed is always lost due to various interference factors.
- The best possible connection is only possible if your Internet comes directly from the router to your PC via cable.
- If you can't do without WLAN, you should at least set up the devices optimally so that the signal is braked to the smallest possible extent by walls and other interference factors. Here you can read how to optimally place your router.
3. Check router performance
- Make sure that your router supports the current maximum speed of your DSL connection.
- Be sure to use certified routers on a VDSL line.
4. Block traffic in the background
- Some programs are sucking on your Internet line in the background - often without you even noticing it.
- With tools like Comodo Internet Security you can find out which programs are accessing your line. You should block unnecessary tools or remove them directly from your computer.
5. Optimize the configuration of the network card
- So that your DSL speed is not slowed down, you should configure your network card accordingly. Therefore, first make sure that you have properly installed all drivers.
- With the free SG TCP Optimizer you can optimize the configuration of your network card. Of course, you cannot use this tool to get more speed than is technically possible.
If you live with several people in one household, all of whom access the same Internet connection, you have to expect reduced speed when used in parallel. If direct cabling is not possible, usually only a DLAN or WLAN helps.
