Use DSLR as a webcam - you have to be aware of that
You can also use your DSLR as a webcam - this works with simple software. Read in this article whether this is also harmless to your camera.
DSLR webcam - you need this:
- If you want to use a Canon camera, you need the EOS Utility Suite.
- We recommend the official Nikon Camera Control Pro software for your Nikon DSLR.
- You have to download ManyCam as additional software.
Connect DSLR as webcam
The following steps are based on a Canon EOS 550D, but differ only slightly from other camera models:
- Connect the computer to your DSLR using a USB cable.
- In the EOS Utility Suite, select the "Camera settings / Remote shooting" mode.
- Now you can determine the settings of the camera from the PC.
- With the "Live View Shoot" function you can see the current camera image. Then open "ManyCam".
- Right-click on the webcam image in the context menu "Desktop"> "App Windows" to select the "Remote Live View window" from Canon.
- ManyCam now transmits the entire window as a webcam image. With the zoom function and you can now only transmit the live image of your camera.
Please note that:
- The LiveView demands a lot from your camera and especially the sensor. Excessive use can dramatically shorten the life of your camera. However, many camera manufacturers incorporate warning messages or an automatic shutdown - so find out beforehand whether your model is protected and how long you can use it.
- Put your DSLR in "manual mode". In this way you can optimize your live image via the PC and, for example, change the brightness or focus point.
- The live view function requires a lot of electricity. Before long webcam transmissions, make sure that you use a full battery.
- ManyCam does not transmit sound. Therefore, switch the sound source manually to a headset or an external microphone. In our guide we show you what to look out for when buying an external microphone.
- ManyCam only transmits the screen. Make sure that your "Remote Live View" window is always in the foreground and is not covered by other programs. Otherwise, ManyCam transmits all other windows - sometimes very helpful.
If you want to buy a really good microphone for your DSLR, you can also use it for high-quality film recordings. We present 3 good external microphones.
