DSLR: filming at night - tips
We show you what you need to consider when filming at night with your DSLR and introduce you to the most important tips.
Attach a fast lens to the DSLR camera
A fast lens is essential when shooting at night. You may be able to expose longer when taking pictures if your lens is not quite as bright, but this is a problem when taking pictures.
- Therefore, pay attention to a fast lens, i.e. a lens with a large aperture.
- A cheap lens (around 95 euros) with a large aperture is the Canon 50 mm lens with an aperture of 1.8.
Camera tripod prevents blurred night shots
To reduce shaking and streaks in the video recordings, it is recommended to use a tripod. So you have a calmer camera work.
- For video recordings for which you cannot use a tripod, a steady cam is alternatively useful. This gives you shake-free recordings.
Filming at night - the right exposure
Light is the most important thing when shooting. If you're filming in the city, finding light sources is less of a problem. However, if you are filming in the forest or in the field, in areas where you have no light sources nearby, you have to provide light yourself.
- With the help of a flashlight or a battery-powered spotlight and a diffuse film, you can build yourself a softbox for the video recordings.
- Alternatively, you can also take a work light from the hardware store. This is normally used in the workshop, but can easily be used for purposes of night photography.
