Burn dual-layer DVD - Here's how
If you want to burn data onto a dual-layer DVD, you have almost twice the space compared to a conventional DVD. We'll explain what else you need to save your data besides the DVD. We also show you exactly how the firing works.
Burn dual-layer DVD - you need that
The generic term for DVDs with 1.8 times the storage capacity compared to a conventional DVD is DL-DVD. In the minus format, "DL" stands for "dual layer", in the plus format for "double layer".
- To be able to burn a dual-layer DVD, you need a burner that can handle these blanks. You can tell from the packaging whether your burner can process this technology. If you find the label "DVD DL", "Double Layer" or "D9" there, the device is suitable. If this imprint is missing, a software update of your old burner is of no use.
- You also need the appropriate burning software that can process DVD DL. You can recognize this very easily: If the program offers the setting option "double layer capacity", it is suitable. The well-known burning suite Nero, for example, has no problems with dual-layer DVD blanks.
- If you burn a dual-layer DVD, you should be able to play it later. Not every DVD player makes the jump from the first to the second layer with these home-made DVDs. At worst, the film ends in the middle.
Burn dual-layer DVD - Here's how
If you have the necessary equipment, the burning of the dual-layer DVD is not very different from that of a normal DVD. For our instructions, we use the "Nero Express" tool, which is included in the free Nero Lite package.
- Insert the dual-layer DVD in your burner and start your burning program.
- First select the "Make Data DVD" option.
- In the next step, set the option "DVD9" in the dropdown menu.
- By clicking on "Add" you determine the files on your computer that are to be burned to the DVD.
- Once you have added all the files, you can see on the lower display bar how much space is left on the DVD. Now click on the "Next" button at the bottom right.
- In the next window you determine the destination. Here, of course, you choose your DVD burner.
- If you click the "Burn" button, the burning process starts. The program shows you when the burning process is finished.
