Commission the transparency unit under Windows 8
You need to put the transparency unit of your Epson scanner into operation, for example, if you want to scan slides with Windows 8. We will explain how to do this using the example of the Epson Perfection 1650.
Epson Perfection 1650: Start up the transparency unit in Win 8
The Epson Perfection 1650 has a built-in transparency unit or TPU (transparency unit) in the lid. If you want to scan transmitted light originals, but have never used this function of the scanner, proceed as follows:
- Make sure that the transparency unit is connected before you switch on the scanner - a short cable with a plug comes out of the cover on the hinge side of the device. Plug it into the appropriate socket below.
- Turn on the scanner and wait for it to initialize.
- When the device is ready, open the scan program and open the manufacturer's TWAIN software. Enter the film type used in the »Document source« field (»Positive« / »Negative«).
- Once you have inserted your template (slides or negative strips) into the holders and positioned them correctly, click on the preview button. After the prescan, you will see the images to be scanned as miniatures. Roughly select the desired area in the preview window. To do this, click and drag an appropriate frame around the objects with the left mouse button. By clicking the "Preview" button again, you can enlarge the selected area and select the edges more precisely.
- When you are satisfied with the preview, go to the parameters menu on the left side of the TWAIN window. Select the resolution and color depth here. Keep in mind that - if you set all controls to the stop - the scanned image file can quickly be 20, 30 MB in size. Finally, click on "Scan" to carry out the scanning process with the transparency unit.
