Wash shower curtain: temperature, detergent and tips
If you wash the shower curtain regularly, you will prevent mold and bacteria in the bathroom. We show you what you have to consider when washing the shower curtain.
Washing the shower curtain: a guide
The showering process gets wet again and again and hangs damp and compressed in the bathtub most of the time. The conditions for germs, bacteria and fungi are ideal. Therefore, you should wash the shower curtain regularly and clean it of germs:
- The easiest way to clean the shower curtain in the washing machine. Be sure to check the label beforehand to see if the material is allowed into the machine. 30 degrees and a delicates program are usually ideal.
- Just wash the curtain and don't add too much detergent. In the best case, use mild detergent.
- You can also pour 50 ml of vinegar into the softener compartment. This kills all germs that otherwise survive at 30 degrees. If heavily soiled, you can add an additional 50 g of sodium bicarbonate directly to the drum.
- Then hang the shower curtain to dry. Let the curtain hang out of the tub, you can also put it back in the bathroom.
- If you iron the dry shower curtain at the lowest level, you can strengthen the impregnation again. Be sure to check the label to see if ironing is allowed.
Clean the shower curtain without the washing machine
If the shower curtain is not allowed to go into the washing machine according to the label, you can also clean it by hand. The cleaning agents remain the same.
- Mix around 50g of baking soda with a little water to create a creamy paste. Use a rag or sponge to gently rub the paste into the shower curtain. You can rinse off the shower curtain after 45 minutes.
- Vinegar not only removes bacteria, but also limescale. Mix two cups of water with one cup of vinegar and rub the mixture into the curtain. Then rinse the curtain thoroughly.
- Alternatively, you can use citric acid, the mixing ratio is also 1: 2. However, make sure to shower the shower curtain cold or lukewarm and not hot.
After washing: protect shower curtain from bacteria
You can take a few precautions to prevent the shower curtain from becoming infected with germs so quickly:
- If you put the shower curtain in salt water for 12 hours after washing, the curtain gets a protective layer of salt. Bacteria stay away longer.
- A thin film of baby oil additionally strengthens the impregnation and prevents the growth of germs. Protection only lasts for a few weeks.
- After showering, pull the curtain back up so that it is not upset. You should also not forget to regularly air the bathroom.
