DVB-S shutdown: SD shutdown of satellite TV - you need to know that
The DVB-S shutdown is getting closer, but you don't have to be afraid of the sudden loss of the TV signal at the moment. We will tell you when DVB-S is over and how to change properly.
DVB-S is switched off: No more SD TV via satellite
In the meantime, every TV station broadcasts its content in high-definition HD quality. At the same time, older devices continue to broadcast in the old SD format. That will soon be over.
- For reasons of cost, the public broadcasters ARD and ZDF will soon no longer receive any money for the old SD television via satellite, the DVB-S. The two transmitters should pull the plug from mid-2020.
- At the moment, however, around 30 percent of viewers are still watching in SD instead of HD. Private channels such as RTL, Sat.1 and Pro7 will still have to transmit in SD via satellite until 2022. After that, the signal will probably also be switched off there.
- To continue to see all channels via satellite, you have to switch to DVB-S2 by mid-2020 at the latest. With the new standard, you will then see all the channels in HD.
Satellite television continues to watch via DVB-S2
However, you will not necessarily need a new TV from 2020. All you need is a DVB-S2 receiver. If your receiver currently only supports DVB-S, a change is absolutely necessary.
- If your old TV is still enough for you, you only need a new receiver. At Amazon you can find good models for just 30 euros, such as the HB digital receiver. Branded products like the following DVB-S2 receiver from Samsung are available for around 50 euros.
- If you want a new TV anyway, switching off DVB-S can be a good reason to buy a new one. When buying, just make sure that a DVB-S2 receiver is integrated. If you find a cheap model without a corresponding receiver, you can easily retrofit here.
- In order to receive all relevant TV channels in HD quality via satellite, you have to pay at a provider of your choice. Television via satellite is available on both Freenet TV and HD +. There you buy a chip card that enables reception in the receiver or directly on the television.
In the next practical tip, we will explain the difference between DVB-T and DVB-S.
