If your DVD player no longer reads the CDs and DVDs, this is in most cases due to a dirty laser. We'll show you how to solve the problem.
This is how your DVD player reads your CDs and DVDs again
- Laser: In most cases, a dirty laser is to blame for the problem. We will show you how to clean it yourself in the next paragraph.
- Cleaning CD: Alternatively, you can also use a cleaning CD. The CD also cleans the laser. Such CDs may not be used in computers or game consoles.
- Compatibility: Some types of CDs and DVDs cannot read some models due to their compatibility. This problem occurs especially with self-burned media.
- Warranty: The manufacturer grants a two-year warranty on electrical devices such as CD and DVD players. If the device is still in this period, you can request a repair or replacement.
- Repairs: If the warranty period has expired and the device is a bit older, repairs are only worthwhile in very few cases. The purchase of a new, current device is usually an advantage.
DVD player does not read discs: clean the laser
- Open the device and find the laser. This is located under a small lens (see picture).
- Dip a cotton swab in rubbing alcohol and drain the swab. It may only be slightly damp.
- Now wipe the lens with the cotton swab. Do not touch any neighboring components.
- Then you can wipe the lens with the dry side. Only wipe the lens once. The remaining alcohol evaporates after a few moments.
In the next practical tip, we will show you what you can do if your CD player does not play CDs you have burned yourself.
