DVD -R and + R: what's the difference?
DVDs come in many different versions, including either -R or + R. Find out exactly what the differences are and why the DVDs are sold in these variations here.
DVD -R and + R - that's the difference
The R variants of a DVD are easily recordable DVDs, which means that you can only play the data once on the data medium. If you want to save the data then changed, you need another DVD. You can read about the differences between - and + R here:
- The biggest difference, which is still of concern today, is the different purchase price. A DVD + R is slightly cheaper than an -R. If you want to record many DVDs and save as much money as possible, you should select the + R.
- The DVD-R is the official successor to the CD-R. It was also recognized by the most important association for DVDs, the so-called 'DVD Forum'. The DVD-R is characterized by a special copy protection that is incorporated directly into the DVD. This is achieved through a special data ring that cannot be played on. This means that the DVD cannot be copied from a burner.
- A DVD-R is usually more expensive because of the recognition from the DVD forum. The DVD + R, however, has no built-in copy protection, but is also cheaper. This should also increase sales of burners sold.
- Nowadays, you no longer need to take + R or -R into account when buying a DVD or burner. Both formats can be played by all common devices. However, if you still have a device that was sold before 2003, you have to choose the right variant.
- Devices built before 2003 often have a problem with the processing of the + R-DVDs. However, you can use the type plate on your burner to find out quickly and easily which DVDs you need to use.
Hard drives have more storage space and are therefore used more and more. Therefore, in the next practical tip you will learn how to copy your DVD to a hard drive.
