DVD vs. Blu-ray: that's the difference
In this practical tip, we explain what the difference between a Blu-ray and a DVD is.
Difference between Blu-ray and DVD: Higher optical quality with the Blu-ray
- A clear visual difference between the two media is immediately visible. With up to five times higher resolution than the DVD, the Blu-Ray offers a gigantic look.
- The sound is also of a much higher quality than the DVD.
- The reason for these qualitative advantages lies in the storage space of the medium. A total of 25 GB (single layer) or 50 GB (dual layer) can be saved on Blu-rays. The DVDs only store 4.7 GB or 8.5 GB.
- In the case of a Blu-ray, the data is written onto the disc much closer together. The size of the laser spot is simply smaller on the Blu-ray and so space is created for more data information compared to the DVD.
- The Blu-ray also has an interactive application layer. Thanks to this layer called BD-J, you can often admire great movie menus with the Blu-rays.
- You need a Blu-ray player to play Blu-rays. This Blu-Ray player has a significantly higher data transfer rate in order to be able to read the larger amounts of data quickly enough compared to the DVD. Blu-ray drives are backward compatible, so they can also play DVDs. The other way around, it is not possible.
