E-bike battery: battery life and how I extend it
The lifespan of the battery of your e-bike depends on many factors. The good news: With the right measures, you can get the most out of your battery. We show you how to extend the life of your battery.
The lifespan of an e-bike battery
According to many manufacturers, modern batteries last around 1000 charging cycles, which refers to full charges. However, these are rather rare, making a lifespan of two to five years realistic depending on use and care.
- The lifespan is closely related to the number of watt hours (Wh), since a battery with more watt hours has to be charged less often and has more cells.
- The smaller the range of your battery, the faster it will discharge and you will have to recharge it more often
- If your range of the battery is slowly shortening, this is a first indication that your battery is getting weaker and is no longer as long-lasting.
Increase the life of your battery
With a few tips, however, the lifespan can be increased. Follow the tips below and you will enjoy your battery and e-bike for a long time.
- In addition to regular cleaning of the contacts and the battery itself, you should never immerse it in water or clean it with a water jet. This can damage the battery. We recommend a slightly damp cloth for cleaning.
- Use only the manufacturer's charger and charge the battery after each ride if you can.
- The ideal charge level is between 30 and 70 percent. You should avoid driving the battery empty, as this can reduce the lifespan.
- In wet or freezing temperatures in winter, you should park your e-bike in a dry or warm environment or remove the battery. The battery lasts longest at 0 to 20 degrees.
- During longer breaks, you should hang the battery from time to time (at least once every six months).
- Do not expose the battery to direct sunlight for long periods. This can be harmful to the battery. It is automatically cooled by the airstream while driving. If your driver is standing, then that is not the case.
