Android: How to encrypt your emails on your smartphone
- Since the Android mail service does not offer its own encryption, you have to use special apps: First install the "APG" security app. It later encrypts your emails in the usual OpenGPG format.
- Then open the app and select the "Manage private keys" option in the menu. Here you can either create a new security key or import an existing one.
- If you create a new key, you have to enter your own user name and your email address under "Main ID".
- Under "Usage" activate the "Sign and encrypt" item and set a password.
- The APG app supports various mail services - for example the free "K-9 mail app". Download them to your smartphone.
- After downloading, you have to register with your email address and a password.
- Then activate "Cryptography APG" in the account settings (see picture) and can immediately send and receive encrypted e-mails.
Encrypt emails on iPhone and iPad
- To encrypt your emails on iPhone, you need a personal certificate. You can create this for free at CaCert, for example. To use it on the iPhone, it is best to send it to yourself by email.
- If you open the e-mail with the certificate in the attachment, it will be shown as "not trustworthy". However, since it is your own certificate, you can open it without hesitation. It can then be found as a "profile" in the settings of your iPhone.
- In the settings, then apply the encryption to the emails: Under "Mail, Contacts, Calendar", open the mail account and tap the "S / MIME" encryption type in "Advanced".
- There you select the certificate you have just created for signing and encryption.
- If you now write an email, the mail app will automatically search for the recipient's security key. If she finds him, the mail is automatically encrypted and a small padlock appears in the subject.
