There is a difference between an e-scooter and an e-scooter. Even if the terms and functions of the vehicle are very similar, one differentiates by the legal situation in Germany. In this article you will learn the difference.
What defines an e-scooter
The e-scooter is an electric scooter. But according to German legislation, an e-scooter becomes an e-scooter if it fulfills certain features.
- The e-scooter needs a handlebar or grab bar.
- This may only drive between six and twenty kilometers per hour.
- In addition, the power of the kick scooter must not exceed 500 watts. With self-balancing e-scooters, it is 1, 400 watts.
- Furthermore, the e-scooter must be road-safe, i.e. like a bicycle, have front and rear lights, working brakes, etc.
- The use of the e-scooter is only permitted on roads and bike paths, not on footpaths.
- There is no obligation to wear a helmet, license plate or driving license, but there is an obligation for liability insurance.
E-scooter: that's the difference
The e-scooter is an electric motor scooter such as the e-scooter UNU. With this you have the same rights but also obligations that apply to a classic scooter.
- Helmets are also required here.
- You can only drive on roads like normal scooters.
- You have to register your e-scooter. Usually, however, an insurance code is sufficient, which means that the TÜV is no longer required every two years.
- The e-scooter must meet normal traffic requirements. So you need front and rear lights, brake lights, working brakes, etc.
