E-scooters on bike paths: Probably allowed in the future
Many see the e-scooter as the perfect means of transportation for short distances. The electrically operated pedal scooters have been available for purchase for several years. In fact, there is still no law for their use in public spaces. That should change in spring 2019. Approval for bike paths is in the starting blocks.
- So far, you have only been allowed to use the so-called "P ersonal Light E lectric V ehicles" (PLEV) on private premises. For you, this means that e-scooters have so far been taboo on bike paths.
- However, a law is to be put in place by mid-2019 that allows you to use e-scooters on bike paths.
- So far, the legislator has stipulated that the maximum speed of 20 km / h must not be exceeded and the power limit is 500 watts.
- In addition, e-scooters should be allowed to drive on sidewalks up to a maximum of 12 km / h. The target group here are children. You must be at least 12 years old.
- The government is planning an "e-scooter free" sign for routes without a cycle path. This is supposed to resemble the widely available "bicycles free" sign.
