E-scooters without street legal: These penalties threaten
There is still no road approval for e-scooters. The electric scooters are often celebrated as a particularly environmentally friendly form of transportation. However, if you are encountered with an e-scooter on the road, you face a severe penalty.

If you are currently driving an e-scooter in public space, at least you are not yet celebrated as an environmental hero. So far, it has not been possible to get official regulations for the e-scooter on the way and driving with such a vehicle is a criminal offense. However, that should change in spring 2019.
- Until then, you should not get caught in public with an e-scooter, because then it can have very unpleasant consequences.
- At the moment you have to expect a substantial penalty if you are caught with the e-scooter on public roads: Because this is not an administrative offense, but a criminal offense.
- This means that the police can confiscate your e-scooter, among other things. Furthermore, a fine of around 70 euros is due and there is also a point in Flensburg.
- In addition, proceedings can be initiated for driving without insurance cover and, depending on the case, for driving without a license.
E-scooter - this is what the BMVI draft for approval looks like
The Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure - BMVI for short - has submitted a draft that is expected to come into force this spring or so.
- Accordingly, the e-scooters can reach a maximum speed of 20 kilometers per hour.
- You can ride on bike paths. If there are no cycle paths, you have to switch to the street. You are not allowed to drive on the sidewalk. Unless your e-scooter reaches a maximum speed of 12 kilometers per hour.
- Furthermore, there should be an insurance obligation for the e-scooters, which is around 90 euros per year.
- According to the new design, there is no obligation to have a driver's license, such as for an e-bike, for the e-scooter. And there is also no requirement to wear a helmet.
- For the e-scooter up to 12 km / h the minimum age should be 12 years and for the e-scooter up to 20 km / h the minimum age should be 14 years.
- There are also various specifications for the equipment of the e-scooters, such as the bell, lights and brakes. The provisions for the e-scooter should be comparable to those for equipping bicycles for traffic in accordance with Section 67 of the Road Traffic Act.
