Build your own e-scooter - you have to keep that in mind
E-scooters have been very popular for a few years now and are now becoming increasingly popular in Europe. However, if you are thinking about building your own e-scooter, there are a few things to consider.
Build your own e-scooter: street legal in Germany
The regulation on the participation of small electric vehicles on public roads has long been discussed. The final draft is now available. From the spring of 2019, the new draft law will make it possible to take part in German road traffic with small electric vehicles. If you are interested in e-scooters, you should know these guidelines.
- Minimum age: You must be at least 12 years old to drive an e-scooter with a maximum speed of 12 km / h. From the age of 14 you can also drive e-scooters at a maximum speed of 20 km / h.
- Driving license: A driving license is not necessary for an e-scooter with a maximum speed of 20 km / h.
- Road traffic: If you reach speeds of over 12 km / h with your e-scooter, you can use the cycle path. If there is no cycle path, you can also ride on the road. If you only reach speeds well below 12 km / h, you can switch to the footpath.
- Insurance obligation : Insurance is compulsory. Your insurance badge must be visibly attached to the rear of the e-scooter.
- Helmets are compulsory: in Germany helmets are only compulsory from a maximum speed of over 20 km / h. For your own safety you should wear a helmet.
Approval for self-made e-scooters
In Germany, e-scooters require a type test or individual approval to be able to take part in public road traffic. Both can be carried out by various European institutions, such as the German TÜV. For your self-made e-scooter you only need a single approval.
- Your scooter will be checked individually.
- The exam takes a few days and can be arranged for little money.
- Your scooter needs a support and handlebar, two independent brakes for front and rear wheel, a bell, and a front and rear light.
