Road approval for e-scooters: these are the advantages
In larger cities abroad, where there is a lot of traffic, e-scooters have long been a popular alternative to the car. Electric vehicles are also becoming increasingly popular in Germany. No wonder when you consider the advantages: E-scooters are environmentally friendly, relatively inexpensive, space-saving, very handy due to their low weight, they can park anywhere and also help to relieve the often critical traffic situation. Whether for the way to work or for leisure - e-scooters can be used in a variety of ways. Some models also have a folding mechanism that allows them to be carried on public transport.
Requirements for street approval of e-scooters
There are precise regulations for the street approval of e-scooters. From the spring of 2019, a new statutory regulation will make it possible to use small electric vehicles to get around on German roads. If you want to be on the road with your e-scooter, you should therefore be familiar with the most important guidelines on the approval, law and regulations of electric scooters. In the following we give you an overview of the regulations for e-scooters in German road traffic, which will apply nationwide in the future.
- Minimum age: The minimum age to drive e-scooters is 14 years, with many rental companies stipulating a contractual minimum age of 18 years.
- Driving license: A moped driving license is required to use e-scooters with a maximum speed above 6 km / h. If you have a scooter, motorcycle or car license, the requirements are automatically fulfilled. No driving license is required for e-scooters with a maximum speed of 6 km / h. Please note that you cannot drive the e-vehicles on public roads without a valid driver's license. Private areas are excluded from this as the road traffic regulations do not apply here.
- Cycle path or street: In contrast to e-scooters, which - like motor scooters - have to drive on the street, e-scooters are allowed to drive both on the bicycle path and on the street. Both companions are not allowed to move on footpaths.
- Insurance and helmet obligation : There is no helmet, license plate or driving license obligation, but there is an obligation for liability insurance. Nevertheless, it is advisable to wear a helmet for your own safety.
- Handrail and handlebar: In order to be approved for road use, e-scooters must have a handrail and handlebar.
- Road safety: Another requirement for e-scooters to be approved for road traffic is the road safety of vehicles. That means, like a bicycle, they must have a front and rear light, a bell and working brakes.
