It is your duty to insure your e-scooter as soon as it has been approved for road use and is driving faster than 6 km / h. In the following practical tip, we explain what you should pay attention to and what costs you can expect.
Insuring e-scooters: how it works
Electric scooters with a maximum speed of over 6 km / h are subject to insurance, which means that they require an operating license and an insurance license plate. If you want to conclude a contract with your insurance company, certain information is required.
- Operating license: To apply for liability insurance, you need a general operating license (ABE) for your e-scooter.
- Vehicle details: The vehicle identification number (VIN) and the vehicle class (small electric vehicle) of your e-scooter are also important. You can find these details on the type plate of your vehicle. The driving force of your e-scooter is also crucial for insurance.
- Personal information: You must also provide the insurance company with precise information about your age and driving license class.
- Carrying the insurance policy: If you are traveling with your e-scooter, it is your duty to have the insurance policy with you at all times. Even if the driver and policyholder are two different people, they must always be carried.
- Insurance premium: The annual premium for electric scooters can vary depending on the scope of insurance, model and your age. However, the costs are roughly based on those of a moped insurance.
- Driving without insurance: If you are driving your e-scooter on public roads without having it insured, you can expect high penalties.
Characteristics for e-scooters: an overview of everything important
E-scooters can drive without official approval. All you need is an insurance code combined with liability insurance. This is required by law and covers the damage you cause. Partial comprehensive insurance, which covers theft, fire, storm and hail, can usually be taken out if necessary.
- Application: If you would like to apply for a license plate for your e-scooter, you should inquire with your insurance company in advance and inquire whether you can collect the license plate on site. If the annual fee is paid in cash, the license plate can usually be taken with you.
- Appearance: The small mark of electric scooters consists of three numbers and three letters.
- Validity: Insurance plates for e-scooters are valid for a period of 12 months. The due date is March 1st each year. Then the license plate is valid until the last day of February of the following year.
- Costs: For the license plate including the insurance premium, you have to expect around 60 to 90 euros. This amount can vary individually.
- Attachment: The license plate is attached below the rear light of the e-scooter. It is important that it is stable and clearly recognizable.
