That is behind Earth Hour
Numerous sights around the world were not illuminated on March 24 from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. and many private individuals also switched off the lights during this time.
- This is intended to set an example for environmental and climate protection.
- Beyond these 60 minutes, people all over the world should be encouraged to live an environmentally friendly life.
- The campaign was introduced by the nature conservation organization WWF.
- This year, the main focus was on animal and plant species whose continued existence is threatened by climate change.
Light off for environmental protection - the story
Earth Hour started in Sydney in 2007:
- On March 31, 2007, more than 2 million Australian households turned off the lights for an hour to signal environmental awareness.
- A year later, 370 cities in 35 countries attended Earth Hour, making it a global movement.
- Earth Hour is now the largest global environmental campaign ever. In total, more than 180 countries and 320 cities in Germany participated in the campaign in 2018.
