Unlock EC card: when is it necessary?
With the EC card, you have access to your account and can make cashless payments. Since this access is only protected by a signature or a PIN, there are some security measures.
- This also includes blocking the card if you enter the wrong PIN three times. If this happens, for example, in the supermarket, the card is usually only blocked after shopping. If you enter your PIN incorrectly on the machine, the card will be drawn in by the machine.
- If you have blocked your card via the blocking emergency call and then found it, you can also unlock it. If your bank has already taken care of a replacement card, it is usually no longer possible to unlock the old card.
Instructions: How to unlock your debit card
If your EC card has been blocked, you must contact your bank directly.
- You can either appear in person at the branch or contact customer service by phone.
- If the card was withdrawn at an ATM at another bank, this bank is not the right contact. Your EC card will be sent to your own bank by post.
- Here you can find the contact options for the largest German banks: Postbank, Commerzbank, ING-DiBa, DKB, Sparkasse, Deutsche Bank.
- You can only keep your old PIN in very few cases. For security reasons, the PIN is changed when unlocked.
Unlock your EC card abroad
If the EC card was blocked abroad but not withdrawn, you can usually unlock the card by phone or online.
- On the other hand, if the card has been withdrawn, there is little you can do on holiday, a new card is needed.
- Tip: If you don't have another card with you, you will find numerous transfer services online. Family members or friends can send you money through these services. You can withdraw the transferred money from the selected bank by presenting your ID card.
