Separating eggs is actually very easy with the classic method and almost always succeeds. In practice, however, it takes practice. It is best to practice when the result does not matter, for example when there should be scrambled eggs.
- You need two bowls and a fresh egg for this method.
- Beat the egg on the edge of a bowl. Try to hit the egg in the middle.
- Now break it apart with both hands. Ideally, you now have two halves of the same size.
- Hold your hands over one of the bowls, because some egg white will drip down. In the picture gallery you can see what it should look like.
- Now move the egg yolk from one egg half to the other. Pour the remaining protein in the bowl into the bowl.
- Repeat the step until you have only yolk left. Then pour this into the other bowl. So the egg is neatly separated.
- The fresher the eggs are, the easier it is to separate eggs. Over time, the membrane inside becomes thinner and the yolk can melt when it breaks open.
Other options with tools
In addition to the method described, there are other ways to separate eggs. To do this, you need one of the following tools:
- Empty water bottle : break the egg. Squeeze the bottle gently and place the opening on the yolk. Then reduce the pressure slightly so that the egg yolk is sucked into the bottle. Press the bottle a little harder again and let the yolk slide into another bowl.
- Egg separator : If you like to have a little fun in the kitchen, you can use silicone egg separators. They are available in all possible variants, for example in animal form. The principle behind it is the same as with the water bottle.
- Funnel : Beat the egg in a small passage funnel. The egg white should drain off and the egg yolk should remain in the top of the funnel. Spoon-shaped egg separators made of stainless steel or skimmers work on the same principle.
- Hands : You can also crack eggs in your hands and keep the yolk in the palm of your hand while the protein runs through the spaces between your fingers. However, this method is not recommended because it can trap bacteria.
- For this reason, you should always wash your hands after handling raw eggs - no matter which method you used to separate the eggs.
Bacteria also play an important role in the packaging of the eggs. In the next practical tip, we will explain why you should not reuse egg boxes.
