In Windows XP, moving your own files means to change the default directory of the "My Documents" folder. In Windows Vista and Windows 7, the personal data is stored as "My Documents". This folder can be moved differently. Read here how to proceed depending on the operating system.
How to move the My Documents folder on Windows XP
To change the default directory of the My Documents folder and thus move your own files, you have to do the following under Windows XP:
- Click on Start.
- Right-click on "My Documents". Select "Properties" here.
- Click the "Target" tab.
- Left-click on "Move".
- Select the folder where you want to move your own files.
- Then click "OK" twice.
- If you want to create a new folder for your own files, select "Create new folder" and enter a name for the folder. Finally, click "OK" twice.
- In the "Move documents" field, select "Yes". This will move your documents to the new directory.
- The "My Documents" folder has thus been moved to the newly selected directory.
Windows 7: Change the path to your own documents
- Navigate to the My Documents folder. Right click on the folder.
- In the newly opened window, select the "Path" tab.
- Click on the middle button "Move ..." - a new window opens.
- In the newly opened window you can either select an existing folder or create a new one.
- Then you have to confirm the pop-up message to move your own files with "Yes".
- The "My Documents" folder and thus your own files have thus been moved to the selected directory.
