Selling your own photos online on agency websites is an attractive additional income. Unfortunately, it's not that easy - especially for amateur photographers. Here you will find tips and the best photo buying websites.
1. Fotolia - the stock photos leader
Fotolia was founded in New York in 2004 as an online photo agency. Many advertising agencies, newspapers and websites buy pictures for professional use relatively cheaply there. A few photographers have become very rich with it. There are millions of motifs to choose from, but they are often similar and you will recognize the many Fotolia models in advertising campaigns if you pay attention to them. Payment is made using Fotolia's own virtual currency, the credits that you can withdraw. A credit corresponds to 1.40 euros.
- The Fotolia account is free of charge. You only have to be over 18 years old.
- As a member, simply upload your photos and add suitable keywords.
- It is important that you are the author of your photos. The motifs must not cause any license problems and you must have the written OK of all the people depicted.
- However, a quality check is then carried out and most amateur pictures are rejected. The prerequisites are JPEG files with a minimum of 2400 x 1600 pixels (4MP) image resolution and a data size of at most 30 MB.
- Payment is made as a share of sales. However, since the photos on Fotolia are very cheap, you shouldn't expect a lot of sales at first. It is the mass that matters, because the ranking (your rating) is based on the number of photos you have already sold.
- Specifically, this means that sales of 20 to 63 percent of the images in the single download take place - depending on your Fotolia status. For images that are downloaded as part of a subscription - which is usually the case - you only receive 0.25 to 0.40 credits per image.
- You can sell your photos exclusively on Fotolia to be ranked higher. However, this is rarely worthwhile and must be carefully considered.
2. Shutterstock - sell photos online
Shutterstock was founded in New York in 2003 and has over 30 million photos online:
- Shutterstock also has an Android app: "Shutterstock". You cannot sell with it, but you can get an impression of the photos on offer.
- As a new photographer, you must also offer JPEG files with at least 2400 x 1600 pixels (4MP) image resolution and a data size of at most 30 MB. Images must not be framed and contain no copyright sign.
- As with Fotolia, it is important that you are the author of your photos. The motifs must not cause any license problems and you must have the written consent of all the people depicted.
- Shutterstock pays in US dollars. For each photo, it starts at 25 cents for beginners and can bring in professionals up to $ 120.
So that a photo can be sold well, the motif should of course also be appealing. In another practical tip, you will learn how to take atmospheric photos in the fog, for example.
