Crop an image in Word - so it'll work
If you want to spice up Word texts with an image, you usually have to crop it beforehand. In our practical tip, we will therefore show you how to crop images, set them to a fixed aspect ratio or determine the image section.

Crop images in Word to a specific shape or aspect ratio
If you want to crop your picture in a shape or a certain aspect ratio, a few simple clicks are enough:
- Double-click the embedded image with the left mouse button.
- At the top of the menu bar click on "Crop" on the right. Small black bars now appear around the image. Click on it and keep the left mouse button pressed to crop the image accordingly.
- If you would like to crop the photo to shapes such as rectangles or arrows, click on the "Image shape" button in the menu bar at the top. Select the desired shape there. Alternatively, you will find the "Image format templates" item in the menu bar. Here you can add frames and effects to your photo.
- Alternatively, you can crop the image to a fixed aspect ratio by right-clicking on the photo and selecting "Size". Then under "Scaling" click on the arrows and change the percentage of height and width. But make sure that both percentages are the same size.
