Moving a registered domain - how it works
If you want to move your website, you can easily take your registered domain with you. We explain the procedure to you based on the large providers Strato and 1 & 1.
Domain move to 1 & 1 - this is how you have to proceed
The move works very easily at 1 & 1:
- Contact your old hoster for a so-called "" Auth code "for your domain.
- Go to the 1 & 1 homepage and select "Domain Transfer" from the "Domain" menu.
- Enter the desired domain to transfer it to 1 & 1.
- Then enter the "Auth code" you have received and tick "I am a domain owner or I am entitled to move". Confirm by clicking on the "Move Domain" button.
- Then enter your personal data. The rest is done by 1 & 1 for you.
Moving domain to Strato - you have to do that
A domain move can also be carried out quickly and easily at Strato:
- You also need the so-called "Auth-Code" from your old provider.
- Go to the Strato website and click on "Change provider" under "Domains".
- Enter the domain you want to move to Strato in the field above.
- Then select the "Move" button next to the domain.
- You can enter the "Auth-Code" either now or later in the customer area. The domain is then added to the shopping cart. You can now select the desired package and then enter your data. Strato will do the rest for you.
Domain move from other providers
Of course, you can also move to another provider. The domain move works almost identically everywhere and is also quick and easy to do there. In general, however, the following applies: You need the "Auth-Code" from your old domain provider in order to be able to move quickly and smoothly.
