Create a virtual credit card - how it works
With a virtual credit card, you can shop anonymously on the Internet (e.g. GooglePlaystore), with some even on site. You can create such a prepaid card from various providers. We show you exactly how this works and what restrictions you have to accept.
How to create a virtual credit card
Many different financial service providers such as "Entropay", "Vexcard", "Neteller" and "Wirecard" offer virtual credit cards. Some providers only give you the card number, others an anonymous plastic card. Using the Wirecard "2go VISA" as an example, we explain how to create such a credit card:
- First you have to buy the "mywirecard" at a petrol station or in the kiosk for around 10 euros and top it up with credit. You will then receive a nameless plastic card.
- Entropay is even faster: Here you pay with your mobile phone bill and immediately receive your Mastercard number. There is no map here.
- The (virtual) card must then be activated. To do this, you need an account with "mywirecard" (or Entropay) and have to enter a cell phone number.
- A PIN code will be sent to them for verification, which you must enter in your account. Alternatively, you can also verify the card with the security code on the proof of purchase.
- Your card is then ready for use. In the next section, you can read why their use is initially limited.
Virtual credit card: anonymous and instant?
Virtual credit cards promise instant credit. However, this is true to a certain extent:
- From a deposit of 100 euros, all providers of virtual credit cards require an identity check by post-ident (in accordance with the Money Laundering Act). In order to purchase more expensive items, you have to plan about 3-4 additional working days.
- Bank transfer, immediate transfer and cash in the shop (e.g. petrol station) are available as deposit options.
- There are not only fees of up to 5 percent, because you also have to plan time for transfers. Some service providers therefore also offer deposits via mobile phone bills.
- With many providers, the card becomes inactive when not in use and must be unlocked for a fee. The period of non-use varies between 6 and 14 months.
Alternative: Create a real credit card for free
Credit cards do not have to be expensive, but can be selected as a payment method almost anywhere. Many banks, such as the Santander Consumer Bank, also offer free credit cards for checking accounts. If you don't want to open a new account, you can get a Visa credit card with the Barclaycard even without changing your account - of course also free of charge.
