Electric car with trailer hitch: These models pull trailers
Electric cars with a towbar are a rare sight on the streets. We explain why this is so in this practical tip.
That is why towing hooks are a rare feature in electric cars
The range of electric vehicles equipped with a trailer hitch is still very poor. In the rarest of cases, you can see such a team on our streets. The reason for this is very simple:
- The progress and development of electric drives for motor vehicles is simply not far enough. While the motors themselves would be able to pull a load, the built-in batteries are far from being.
- The batteries of electric vehicles quickly reach their limits even in normal use. The exact range cannot be predicted precisely due to the high dependence on various factors.
- The already short range of many electric cars would shrink by up to 75% due to an additional trailer load.
Tesla X: This electric car can do it
At the moment there is only one electric vehicle on the market that can pull a trailer from the factory. Depending on the wheel size, the SUV Tesla X can tow up to 2, 250 kilograms, the trailer hitch can be retrofitted for around 1, 000 euros.
- The Tesla X has a powerful motor in conjunction with a powerful battery that brings up to 100 kWh of capacity.
- This combination gives the Tesla a range with a fully loaded trailer of up to 146 kilometers per "tank filling".
- With a range without a tensile load of up to 500 kilometers, however, this means a loss of about 70 percent battery capacity.

In addition to a trailer, low temperatures also affect the range of your electric car. You can find out how high the range loss in winter is in the next article.
