Three years after the large uniform mattress test by Stiftung Warentest, an Emma mattress is - or rather lies - again under scrutiny: and promptly wins the test. We took a closer look at the test result and explain how good the Emma One mattress really is.
Emma mattress at Stiftung Warentest 2019: This year's favorite
Three years ago, Stiftung Warentest tested standard mattresses. These "one fits all" mattresses were scandalous for the industry. No matter whether large, small, thick or thin: It is said that everyone sleeps well on them. The manufacturer of the Emma mattress even speaks of "perfect sleep". The examiners cannot easily sign this, but Emma One is the test winner in this year's mattress test.
- The company has therefore taken the feedback from Stiftung Warentest to heart. An overall grade of 4.2 (2016) for a former model turns into a proud 1.7 (2019) for the new Emma One.
- According to the Stiftung Warentest report, the old model was no longer sold at the end of 2016. At that time there was criticism for the inherent odor that often occurs with compressed mattresses, missing handles and a non-existent declaration.
- With the new Emma One, the manufacturer now gets good to very good test results in all categories. (see below)

This is how the Emma mattress performs in 2019
The Emma One model came on the market in mid-2018. The manufacturers have not only taken the test results to heart, but also the test methods. There is now an in-house test laboratory in Frankfurt with 6 engineers who work with equipment similar to that used by Stiftung Warentest. No wonder that the test results have improved. All information and the complete ranking can be found for a fee on test.de.
- The Emma One mattress is correctly declared - and that is "hard". The tests also showed that. Declaration and advertising: very good (1.4).
- Emma One also did well in terms of its own smell after unpacking: only volatile organic compounds are used. In addition, the manufacturer has been letting the materials lie longer before processing. Health and Environment: good (1.9) .
- It is easy to use and the outer packaging can also be disposed of as it is not required when it is returned. Handling: very good (1.2) .
What else you need to know about the Emma mattress
In addition to the Emma One for 299 euros, there are two other models: the Emma Original and the Premium Model Emma Air (in this country only available on eBay). According to the manufacturer, Emma's standard mattresses are suitable for all sleep and body types.
- The mattresses consist of three layers of foam that become firmer from top to bottom. According to the manufacturer, it doesn't matter how heavy or light, big or small you are.
- Nevertheless, Emma One has three degrees of hardness for "fine adjustment": hard, medium and soft. In Germany, firm mattresses are primarily sold, which is why Stiftung Warentest also tested the hard version.
- The mattresses for the German market are produced exclusively in Germany. Only some of the covers are delivered from other European countries. Emma also has production sites in Switzerland, the UK and the USA for sales in all 20 countries.
- Germany orders the firmest mattresses, followed by Portugal. The Netherlands orders the softest.
- Around a third of all mattresses are 90 by 200 centimeters, another 20 percent 140 by 200 centimeters.
- Special sizes are particularly popular in Scandinavia and the Netherlands: around 50 percent of all ordered mattresses are a little overlength at 210 centimeters.
