Equalizer - what is it? Easily explained
In this practical tip, we not only explain what an equalizer is, but also what the device is good for. We also describe the common basic types.
Equalizer - what is it?
The term equalizer comes from the English word "to equalize", which means "equalize".
- An equalizer is an electronic component in sound engineering.
- With an equalizer, sounds can be equalized or edited artistically. Disturbing sound frequencies are corrected or edited. The goal is to achieve a more pleasant sound.
- Certain audio signals within an audio spectrum, e.g. highs, lows or midtones, are specifically raised or lowered with an equalizer.
- With an equalizer you adapt the sound to the acoustics of a room. Depending on the room acoustics, you can use an equalizer to equalize disturbing signal sources, achieve specific timbres and avoid feedback.
The basic systems of equalizers
Equalizers are divided into two basic systems.
- A graphic equalizer has its own controller for each frequency band that can be influenced. Here, the course of the correction of the individual frequencies is "graphically" represented by the controller.
- On the other hand there are parametric equalizers. This allows you to set the center frequency and the change in amplitude for one or more frequency bands. So you can continuously increase or decrease entire bandwidths at frequencies. These equalizers are built into mixing consoles and effects units.
To listen to music, you also need speakers. We explain in the next practical tip how important the speaker cable cross-section is.
