First aid for children differs in some respects from immediate measures for adults. We show you what you need to know and how to react correctly in an emergency.
First aid for children - that's what matters
- Children have significantly less reserves than adults. Since less blood flows through the small body, for example, even small amounts of blood loss are much more serious than in an adult. We will show you in another article how to create a pressure bandage in an emergency.
- A child's body is made up of a higher percentage of water than an adult body. Therefore, small children are much more at risk of dehydration, for example in the heat.
- A special first aid course for children is therefore recommended for parents and people who have a lot to do with children. For example, you will learn there that the diameter of a child's windpipe is only eight millimeters - just as much as a pencil. Shortness of breath can quickly become life-threatening.
- Prevention is still the best help. There is a lot you can do to avoid injuries and emergencies. Supervise your children and make the apartment childproof. You can also find the best tips from us.
- For example, if your child learns to swim early, this is also a prevention against swimming accidents.
Well equipped with a first aid kit
The medicine chest should contain everything you can at least treat injuries with.
- In addition to gauze bandages and elastic bandages, bandage scissors should be within reach.
- For heavily bleeding wounds, a gauze bandage with a larger, absorbent wound pad should be available. Adhesive plasters are ideal for minor injuries.
- The first aid kit should also contain a skin and mucous membrane disinfectant. The non-burning variant is recommended for children.
- In the event that your child burns or scalds, a rescue film must also be available. You can find out which first aid is used for incineration from us.
- In any case, you should always call the emergency doctor on 112 if you experience severe pain, loss of consciousness, wounds that bleed heavily or are short of breath.
