Take food through airport security: this is allowed
If you want to take food with you through the security check at the airport, you have to be careful. Because many foods are not allowed and are mercilessly taken out of your luggage. We show what security personnel look out for and what you can take with you.
Take food through security
You can put as much food (and drink) in the hold baggage as you like. In some countries, however, customs regulations regulate what may actually be imported into the country. However, the rules for hand luggage at the security check are much stricter.
- You must not take all liquids in your hand luggage through the security check. The security staff is very strict: creams, spreads and similar (light) liquid foods are also taboo. So you have to do without liver sausage and Nutella.
- You can easily take fruit and vegetables to the gate and on the plane.
- Drinks are not allowed - regardless of whether it is a smoothie bottle, unopened coke can or a bottle of water.
Tips & Tricks: Get food and drink through the security check
- 100ml products: You can fill a transparent 1 liter bag with liquid / semi-liquid products, the max. Have 100ml content. Fortunately, Nutella is available in 15g packs
- Duty-Free: All products you buy in Duty-Free can also be taken through the security check. They must be in the sealed security bag. But keep in mind that you are not allowed to import alcohol to other countries indefinitely.
- Empty bottle: You can take an empty bottle through security, but not a full one. After the security check you can refill the bottle. However, you should only do this at airports in countries with high drinking water standards.
- Souvenirs: If you only travel with hand luggage and want to take Nutella as a souvenir, the duty-free shop is again a good choice. The Nutella costs more there, but it also goes through the controls.
- Baby food & medication: The liquid ban does not apply to baby food. However, you must actually travel with a baby - otherwise the security staff will collect the baby food. Medications are fine too, but in some cases you will be asked for a prescription.
- Children: Anyone traveling with children can use their 1 liter bag. Kids often don't need a lot of liquids except for a toothpaste, but you can use the remaining space in the bag for groceries.
