Excel: Rounding - function & examples
With a certain function you can round off all numbers in Excel from a desired decimal place. We show you how to use the function and give examples.
Round down in Excel
- The rounding function is: ROUND DOWN (number; number_digits)
- Explanation: For "Number", enter the number with decimal places to be rounded off. Then a semicolon followed by the number of decimal places. If you only want numbers without a comma, enter [0].
- Example: The number 320, 496 should be rounded down to one decimal place. Therefore, enter the formula "= ROUNDDOWN (320, 496; 1)". The result is 320.4 in the cell.
Round off all numbers in a column
To round off all the numbers in the column, you have to do something different. You can enter the formula for each cell individually, but it takes too long for many numbers. You can therefore have all numbers rounded in the column next to it.
- To do this, click in the cell next to the first number you want to round down. If this is no longer available, you can add a new column in the "Start" menu on the far right with "Insert".
- Then enter the following formula: = Round down (cell; number_digits).
- Explanation: For cell, enter the first cell you want to round down.
- Example: If all numbers in column A are to be rounded down to one decimal place and the first number is in cell A3, enter = Round down (A3; 1).
- Apply to column: To ensure that not only A3, but also all cells below it, are rounded off, pull the small square down at the corner of the cell with the formula you just entered. This applies the formula to all subsequent cells.
Next, we'll show you how to mark all negative numbers in red in Excel and all positive numbers in green.
