Excel: enumeration in a cell - so it'll work
In Excel, you can not only number your entire table, but also place the list in a cell. We show you how to do this.
Excel: enumeration in a cell
The spreadsheet "Excel" from "Microsoft Office" is not designed for word processing. The automated enumeration that you know from Word is therefore not available in Excel. With a little trick you can manually create an enumeration in a cell:
- Line break: The line break allows you to create multiple enumerations within a cell. To do this, mark the relevant cell and click on "Line break" in the "Alignment" tab in the menu bar. If you have an older Excel without a menu bar, you can reach the line break by right-clicking on the cell. In the context menu click on "Format cells". You can now activate the line break in the "Alignment" area.
- Size: Then adjust the size of the cell before starting the enumeration. In another practical tip, we will show you how to automatically adjust the row height in Excel.
- Key combination: If the line break is activated for a cell, create a new line with the key combination [Alt] and [Enter]. This way you can gradually create your enumeration within a cell. At the beginning of the line you determine the type of enumeration yourself - either numbers, letters or symbols.
- Symbols: If you have chosen a symbol, you have to insert it manually. To do this, select the "Insert" menu item in Excel and click on "Symbol" in the "Symbols" area. Then mark the appropriate icon and select "Paste".
