Excel: Remove sheet protection
If you have received an Excel file with a sheet protection, you can only edit the sheet if you remove the protection. We'll show you how it's done.
Remove sheet protection in Excel documents
The sheet protection can only be removed if you know the password for the protection. If the file is not from you, you must first ask for the password.
- Open the protected file and go to the Review tab at the top.
- Under the "Changes" category you will now find the "Remove sheet protection" button.
- Enter the password and confirm your entry with "OK". If you no longer know the password, explain in our video what you can do.
- Then the protection is released and you can edit the sheet. You can reactivate it using the "Protect sheet" button.
This practical tip shows you how to password-protect an entire workbook in Excel.
